For the TAPRA 2022 Scenography Working Group

From January to August 2022, the Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC) based in Ottawa, ON gathered a cohort of ten international artists for the Tender Circuits AR project. The Canada Council for the Arts’ “Digital Now” program funds the commissioning initiative, aiming to engage multidisciplinary artists in the creation of experimental site-specific augmented reality works, centring around the theme of fungal intelligence and mycelial systems as networks.

Our creation, BRUTALISM FOR BIRDS, animates an augmented reality (AR) postcard depicting what is currently a disused, gated urban greenspace in Ottawa’s Centretown neighbourhood. This space is formerly the site of the London Arms Apartments, a 49-unit apartment complex torn down in 2017. When viewed through the Artivive phone application, murmurations of birds encircle a floating birdhouse, superimposed above the empty lot. BRUTALISM FOR BIRDS aims to provoke considerations of the fragilities, limitations and interdependencies of urban housing supply. In this instance, it provides an initial case study into the scenographic potentials of augmented reality for DIY (do-it-yourself) interventions in urban space.
